Spring Blog #6- The end

  1. Blog #6 - Chapter 8-9 - Due 2/13

    1. Describe your feelings at the end of this novel.

The end of the novel made me very upset and left me with an empty feeling. It is so sad to see that people could be dehumanized to the point that it was a relief that Elie lost his father.

  2. 2.  If you had to point to one paragraph, page, event, or moment in this novel which affected you the most, what would it be and why?

The point in the story the greatly effected me always in chapter 5 when Elie was describing Akiba Drumers eyes. This part of the story greatly touched my heart because it was so upsetting to see someone loss so much faiths in their God.

Spring Blog #5- Family comes first

Blog # 4 - Chapter 5 - Due 2/6

Describe and explain the changing relationship Wiesel faces with his father.  Think about Wiesel's thoughts about Rabbi Eliahou and his own son, about the fight between the father and son over the bread, and about Wiesel's battle with his father's increasing weakness.

In chapter 6, Wiesel and his fathers relationship changes when they are doe ending on each other throughout there trip while they are moving. There are multiple encounters when Wiesel could give up on his dad and leave him behind but he pushes on to keep him and his dad alive. Pit becomes harder when Wiesel must think about his father first before himself even when he is about to die.

Spring Blog #4- Another Soul Lost

Blog # 4 - Chapter 5 - Due 2/6

  1. It has been said that a person's eyes are windows into the soul.  How does Elie describe the eyes of Akiba Drumer?  Why does Drumer lose his will to live?  How about Elie?  Is there a difference between the two?  Why or why not?

Elite describes Akaiba's eyes as "glazed" as they tell everyone how weak he has become. Drummer looses his will to live because he has lost his faith in God. This is also scene in Elie because he is loosing his faith in God as well. There is similar aspects between Drumer and Elie but they are different because Drumer has given up all faith and Elie still has some left.

  1. Why would the Germans go to all the trouble of moving the prisoners away from the front lines into the heart of Germany?  (look for two reasons)
The first reason they would move all of the prisoners is because Hitler and the Germany army want to take out all Jewish people. The second reason is they wanted to hide all of the evidence of what they have been doing.

Spring Blog #3- Biting back the pain

  1. Wiesel almost overwhelms us with his descriptions of his concentration camp experiences.  Choose one experience he describes that sticks out in your mind and explain: (a) the experience, (b) the effect of the experience on Wiesel, and (c) the effect of reading about the experience on you.
One of the experiences that stuck out to me the most is when Elie was attacked by Idek for no reason. Being attacked and hit everywhere caused Elie to be in extreme aching pain. This is a gruesome scene because Elie could not do anything to protect himself except to bare the pain so he would not be punished. To imagine having to bite your lip so hard to endure the pain makes me hurt even just reading about it.

Spring Blog #2- Giving Up

Blog #2 - Chapter 3

1. “But I had ceased to pray. How I sympathized with Job! I did not deny God’s existence, but I doubted His absolute justice.” Who is Job? How is his story related to Elie’s own? At what point does this spiritual change begin in Elie?

Job is one of Jesus deciples who was tested by God to see if he would cave into the devil or stick with the Lord. Job and Elie's stories are similar because they both are stripped away of everything to be tested by the Lord. Elie's spirituality changes when he begins to feel the God is no longer on his side.

2. Choose one other quote from this chapter that you feel is significant to the story. Explain why it is important.

"For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for?(33 Wiesel)" This quote is significant to the story because it is the first time that Elie underestimates God. He begins to wonder why He was not doing anything as thousands of lives were being killed.

Spring Blog #1- Into the flames

Blog #1 - Chapter 2 - Due 1/281.  What is the significance of the flames?  (2-3 sentence answer)

In the story "Night" by Elie Wiesel, the flames in chapter 2 are significant because no one believed Mrs. Schächter when she was yelling that there were flames outside. She was trying to warn the other jews that there was danger just like Moishe the Beadle but no one believed either of them when there was danger.

2.  Please write a paragraph reaction log thinking about issues such as:  what do you think of the book so far?  what was your favorite part of the reading?  what part of the reading surprised you the most?  what do you know about Elie as a young boy?

The book is very realistic which changes how someone interprets the context of the book. The description of what Elie was seeing when he was a young boy gives off a different perspective then other stories about the Holocaust. While reading the beginning part of the story, it surprised me how descriptive Elie is, remembering when he was so young. I perceive that Elie as a young boy was very strong and independent but he was tested a lot during this experience.
